Casualty Services

Our mission is to provide dignified compassionate and humane notification to family members and other designated persons as promptly as possible after a member is placed in a casualty status.  Casualty Assistance Representative (CAR) will provide support and assistance to next of kin or other beneficiaries of a deceased member with claim applications for all eligible benefits.

Death of an Active Duty Member:

To report an active duty death, contact the 49th Wing Command Post at (575) 572-4900.

       Active Duty Survivor’s Guide to Benefits:
Intended to aid family members as they work through the difficulty and pain of losing a loved one who served in the military. It is designed to give family members a clear idea of how we will assist, starting with the first meeting with the Casualty Assistance Representative (CAR).

     Death of a Retiree:

To report a retiree death, contact DFAS Retired Pay at 1-800-321-1080. 

Retiree Survivor’s Guide to Benefits is intended to aid surviving family members of a retired Air Force or Space Force member.  Our office provides personal assistance in applying for eligible benefits on the member’s behalf.

  • Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (SGLI) – Active Duty member’s elected life insurance

  • Family Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (FGLI) – Family member’s life insurance if Active Duty member is covered by SGLI

  • Veterans’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI) – Veterans’ life insurance if elected

  • Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) – Annuity that is provided to spouse and/or dependent children of an Active Duty member.

  • Death Gratuity (DG) – Benefit that is paid to the individual listed on the Active Duty member’s DD Form 93 (vRED)

  • Arrears of Pay (AOP) – Unpaid pay owed to the Active Duty member and basic housing will be provided to the elected beneficiary

  • Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) – Tax free VA compensation payment to eligible spouse and dependents

  • Thrift Saving Plan (TSP) – Beneficiary would receive or possible roll over the funds to their own TSP

  • Montgomery GI Bill Active Duty (MGIB-AD) – Educational funds is provided to the SGLI beneficiary
